Importance of Traffic Signage

How regulatory, warning and informational signs work alongside road marking.

Traffic signage and road marking do different jobs that work together. Road marking is read continuously as a driver moves; signage delivers a specific instruction or warning at a fixed point, often before the driver reaches it.

Regulatory signs

Communicate a rule that must be followed — stop, speed limit, no entry, no parking. These carry legal weight and are usually placed where the rule takes effect.

Warning signs

Alert drivers to a hazard or change in road conditions ahead — a sharp curve, a falling-rocks zone, a pedestrian crossing, a narrow bridge — giving them time to adjust speed or position before reaching it.

Informational signs

Provide directional, distance or facility information, helping road users navigate without needing to slow down to read road markings alone.

Why signage and marking work best together

A junction with box-grid marking but no warning sign, or a warning sign with no supporting stop line, each leave a gap in the information a driver receives. Treating signage and marking as one road safety scheme, rather than separate items, is why they are offered together.
