What Is Thermoplastic Road Marking?
How hot-applied thermoplastic marking works, and where it is typically used.
Thermoplastic road marking is a road-marking material that is heated until molten, applied to the road surface, and left to cool into a hard, bonded line. This is different from road marking paint, which is applied cold and dries through solvent evaporation rather than by cooling.
How it is applied
The thermoplastic material — typically supplied as granules or blocks — is heated in a kettle or applicator machine until it becomes a workable molten compound. It is then applied to the prepared road surface at a controlled thickness, using a hand-guided or ride-on applicator, following the required line width, length and pattern.
Reflective glass beads
Glass beads are added to the marking, either mixed into the material before application or sprayed onto the surface immediately afterwards. These beads give the marking retroreflectivity: they reflect vehicle headlights back toward the driver, which is what makes thermoplastic markings clearly visible at night.

- Zebra / pedestrian crossings
- Directional arrows and word markings
- Industrial and institutional facility roads
Why it's chosen over paint
Because it bonds to the road surface as it cools rather than simply drying on top of it, thermoplastic marking is generally used where a more durable and more reflective line is wanted than conventional paint typically provides — for example on higher-traffic roads, junctions, or facility roads that see frequent vehicle movement.
